ADESINA: AFRICA HAS HUGE RENEWABLE ENERGY POTENTIAL BUT 600 MILLION LACK ELECTRICITY

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, outgoing AfDB President, spotlighted Africa’s massive renewable energy resources—solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal—during the 2025 Standard Chartered Bank Africa Summit in Lagos. Yet, 600 million Africans remain without electricity. He urged massive investments to close this gap and fuel industrial growth.

Adesina revealed the AfDB-World Bank’s Mission 300 aims to connect 300 million people to electricity by 2030, requiring $127 billion in public-private funding. He emphasised expanding public-private partnerships and creating bankable projects to attract capital. Beyond energy, Africa needs $1.3 trillion yearly for infrastructure, health, education, and digital connectivity to meet the UN’s SDGs by 2030.

His message: Africa must shift from aid dependency to investment-driven growth, unlocking its vast resources for a prosperous future.
