At the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate urged a bold shift toward a “New Public Health Order” for Africa, emphasising domestic financing, local manufacturing, and true ownership of health systems. He challenged outdated global health frameworks shaped by external priorities, calling for Africa to lead its path rooted in sovereignty, equity, and local needs.
Pate outlined a seven-point strategy including South-South alliances, renegotiated trade deals, stronger WHO independence, innovative domestic financing, AfCFTA-driven health industrialisation, and protecting intellectual property while fostering innovation. He stressed the vital role of public-private partnerships and Africa’s need to transition from the sidelines to leaders in global health governance. Nigeria is already advancing reforms in primary care and digitisation to support this vision.
