HIROSHIMA COMMEMORATES 80 YEARS SINCE ATOMIC BOMBING AS NUCLEAR TENSIONS RISE

On the 80th anniversary of the devastating U.S. atomic bombing, Hiroshima honoured the victims with a solemn ceremony, including a moment of silence at the exact time the bomb fell. Mayor Kazumi Matsui urged youth to carry forward the fight against nuclear arms, warning that poor decisions on military policies risk repeating inhumane tragedies.

With an estimated 140,000 lives lost by the end of 1945, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki remains a grave reminder of nuclear horrors. The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize recognized survivors’ group Nihon Hidankyō for advocating a nuclear-free world. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres cautions that nuclear threats are escalating once again, with these weapons used as tools of intimidation.
