WFP WARNS OF FOOD AID SUSPENSION FOR 1.3M IN NORTHEAST NIGERIA
The UN World Food Programme says funding shortfalls could halt all emergency food and nutrition aid for 1.3 million people—including 300,000 infants—in northeast Nigeria by the end of July.
WFP urgently needs $130 million to keep food assistance running for the next six months, but as resources dry up, dedicated nutrition clinics risk closure and families face tougher choices. With 31 million Nigerians facing acute food insecurity, the threat of suspended aid comes as violence and displacement soar. WFP warns this could force many to migrate, adopt harmful coping strategies, or risk recruitment by extremist groups.
WFP commends the Nigerian and Borno governments for their support, but stresses the scale of the crisis requires immediate new funding and creative solutions to prevent a worsening humanitarian disaster.
