Lagos and Friends Serve Up ₦500 Billion “Produce for Lagos” Feast to Fix Food Flow
On Wednesday, Lagos State rolled out a hefty ₦500 billion agricultural boost dubbed “Produce for Lagos,” a bold initiative aimed at tackling food insecurity while spicing up the state’s sprawling market scene. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, flanked by heavyweight governors from Ogun, Taraba, Niger, and Kogi states, along with Lagos Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and ministers including Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, launched the programme at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
The goal? To create a seamless farm-to-market pipeline in Nigeria’s commercial capital, which gobbles up more than half of the South-West’s food trade, valued at a jaw-dropping N16.14 trillion. This partnership blends state government power with private sector muscle to guarantee bulk produce off-take contracts, unlock financing, and upgrade logistics — including deploying a fleet of 150 cold and dry trucks, the largest of its kind.
The Produce for Lagos initiative not only looks to cut food inflation and reduce imports but also fosters interstate alliances with land-rich states like Niger to overcome Lagos’s limited farmland. Commissioner Abisola Olusanya explained that this strategy finally ties together production, marketing, and distribution, filling a vital gap that’s long hampered Nigeria’s food supply chain.
In sum, Lagos is cooking up a plan to feed its bustling population more reliably while creating fresh jobs and economic opportunities across the agri-food value chain. The event brought together a who’s who of political, business, and community leaders, showcasing a united front to feed Lagos — and the nation — better.
