UN URGES AFRICA TO BET ON YOUTH FOR DIGITAL FUTURE
UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed calls on Africa to harness its booming youth population—over 850 million by 2050—by investing in STEM education and digital infrastructure to unlock the continent’s full potential.
Speaking at the UN in New York, Mohammed warned that only 19% of Africans currently access social protection, a gap hindering innovation and growth. The report discussed stressed the urgent need for African-led solutions, regional cooperation, and a people-centred approach to close the digital divide—especially for women and rural communities.
With 98% of African youth lacking basic STEM skills and 75% facing insecure employment, time is running out to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals unless systemic transformation happens now.
