GLOBAL DROUGHTS IN 2023-2025: A SILENT CATASTROPHE WORSENING FOOD AND ENERGY CRISES

New UNCCD and NDMC report reveals that recent droughts—among the worst ever recorded—are silently devastating millions, triggering hunger and energy blackouts across Africa.

Countries like Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia face catastrophic crop failures, soaring food prices, and severe power shortages from shrinking rivers and dams. In Zimbabwe, maize dropped 70%, and thousands of cattle died; in Zambia, hydroelectric output plummeted, causing 21-hour blackouts.

The report urges stronger drought monitoring, nature-based solutions, resilient infrastructure, and global cooperation to tackle this escalating crisis.
