GAZA AID CONVOY UNDER FIRE: WFP REPORTS “COUNTLESS LIVES” LOST WAITING FOR FOOD
Starving Palestinians waiting for a UN aid convoy in Gaza were killed and injured by Israeli fire, the World Food Programme (WFP) announced Sunday, condemning the attack as “completely unacceptable” amid a deepening hunger crisis.
The WFP reported that a 25-truck convoy crossing into northern Gaza was met by large crowds seeking food. As the convoy approached, the area came under fire from Israeli tanks, snipers, and other weaponry . The incident resulted in numerous fatalities and critical injuries, with the WFP emphasising that these individuals were “simply trying to access food to feed themselves and their families on the brink of starvation” .
Local health authorities in Gaza reported 67 Palestinian deaths, while the Palestinian news agency WAFA stated 58 were killed and at least 60 injured in the incident . The Israeli military acknowledged firing “warning shots” due to an “imminent threat” and is investigating, but expressed doubts about the casualty figures reported .
The WFP criticised the breach of assurances from Israeli authorities that humanitarian convoys would not face military engagement . Since late May 2025, hundreds have died near aid distribution points and convoys in Gaza . The UN human rights office documented at least 798 deaths near aid sites and convoys between May 27 and July 7, 2025 .
