GOLF GOES FROZEN: NORTH POLE HOSTS FIRST-EVER CLOCK GOLF SHOWDOWN
Who says golf needs green fairways? In July 2025, the North Pole traded grass for ice in the historic North Pole Clock Golf Championship — a chilly twist on a classic mid-19th-century game. Golfers from eight countries swapped sand traps for snowdrifts, putting from positions arranged like a giant clock face on the Arctic ice.
Held just hours before the epic North Pole Marathon, this cool competition set a record as the very first official golf tournament at the geographic North Pole. It’s golf like you’ve never seen it before — where Arctic conditions meet old-school charm, and birdies are measured by frostbite risk.
Forget the Arctic Open in Iceland; this is the real polar plunge for golf enthusiasts craving extreme sports meets winter wonderland. Expect a whole new meaning to the phrase “tee off” — on ice!
Meet the Arctic Golfers and the Chill Challenge
Nineteen intrepid players from China, United Kingdom, Iceland, India, Poland, Netherlands, Lithuania, and the USA braved Arctic snow and biting cold to compete in the inaugural North Pole Clock Golf Championship last week (July 12, 2025).
This Victorian-inspired clock golf event featured four tee positions arranged like a clock face on ice, with players putting toward a single central hole — a chilly twist on tradition. The winner? Briton James Elliot-Square, living in Dubai, who putted his way to the title with a slick 49 strokes in just 33 seconds.
Even golfers new to the sport found themselves enchanted by what one Hong Kong player called “probably the most innovative and cool golf I’ve ever done.”
This quirky, frostbitten tournament wasn’t just about golf — it was a demonstration of creativity and endurance at the top of the world.
