KADIRI IKHANA CALLS IN: BRIGHT SPIRIT SHINES FROM IRRUA HOSPITAL!

KADIRI IKHANA CALLS IN: BRIGHT SPIRIT SHINES FROM IRRUA HOSPITAL!

Just as the sun rose this morning, a special ring woke Dr. Segun Odegbami, MON — none other than Kadiri Ikhana, MON, calling in to say hello and share some hopeful news. Despite still sounding a bit weak (he’s recovering at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo State), Kadiri’s spirit is strong and healing well.
He sends a heartfelt THANK YOU to every Nigerian who has prayed, supported, and reached out — from AirPeace’s chairman to the Governor of Kwara State, the NFF president, the Customs boss, and especially the Edo State Governor, who’s taking a hands-on approach with his care. Shoutout also to Hon. Austin Braimoh for standing by Kadiri’s side during this journey.
Kadiri’s kids abroad are rallying too, and on their behalf, Dr. Odegbami urges everyone to keep the prayers coming for this football legend’s full recovery. Healing is underway, powered by top care and the blessings of the Creator.

A little background on Ikhana’s health challenges.

Kadiri Ikhana, 73, former Super Eagles defender and legendary coach, has been battling a serious prostrate-related illness, which led to his hospitalization at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo State. His condition was described as critical, requiring intensive medical care including an urgent blood transfusion. Ikhana was initially treated in Auchi before being transferred to Irrua for more specialist treatment.
Despite his winning legacy—highlighted by coaching Enyimba to Nigeria’s first CAF Champions League title in 2003 and being part of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad—he has faced mounting health and financial challenges in retirement. The situation sparked widespread alarm from former teammates and supporters, with former national captain Olusegun Odegbami appealing for urgent assistance for Ikhana’s medical bills and welfare. The Edo State government and sports officials have also stepped in to support his care.
This health crisis highlights the broader issue of poor support for retired Nigerian athletes facing debilitating health problems from the toll of their sports careers.
