ENGINEERS ON THE MOVE: ENG. HABU GUMEL MARATHON WALK KICKS OFF IN ABUJA!
Abuja, July 12, 2025 – It was a day where brains met brawn as Nigeria’s top engineers and sports leaders gathered for the inaugural Engr. Habu Gumel Olympic Marathon Walk Competition. The event, held in Abuja on Saturday, celebrated endurance, engineering excellence, and sportsmanship in one spirited marathon walk.
The star-studded opening saw President of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE), Margaret Oguntula, warmly presenting a bouquet to the man of the hour — Engr. Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and former NSE President. The ceremony also featured key figures like Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the Nigerian Sports Commission, and Mustafa Shehu, President of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO), all rallying behind this unique fusion of sports and engineering.
The competition wasn’t just about the walk; it was about celebrating the legacy of Engr. Gumel and fostering camaraderie among engineering professionals. Isaac Ogundare, winner of the 40-50 year age category, received hearty congratulations from Engr. Gumel himself, with NSE executives like Deputy President Ali Rabiu and President Oguntula cheering on.
This marathon walk is more than a race; it’s a stride toward unity, health, and honouring Nigeria’s engineering heritage.
