BANDIT CRISIS WORSENS IN NIGER, PLATEAU; KWARA COMMUNITIES TURN TO SPIRITUAL DEFENCE
As bandit attacks escalate in Niger and Plateau, some Kwara locals are fighting back with spiritual power—sparking hope and controversy amid growing insecurity.
On July 8, over 13 people, including security personnel, were killed in a daylight raid by heavily armed bandits from Zamfara in Niger State’s Mariga LGA. While official security responses remain muted, calls grow louder for traditional, homegrown solutions. Special Adviser Jonathan Tsado Vatsa urged Nigerians to embrace local security models, citing Kwara’s spiritual resistance as a bold example.
In Patigi, Kwara, reports say about 20 bandits died mysteriously after prayers by spiritually empowered Nupe women, who grew weary of kidnappings and ransom demands. This spiritual intervention has reportedly shaken bandit morale, with some seeking peace.
Meanwhile, in Plateau’s Kanam LGA, a deadly clash between Miyetti Allah vigilantes and bandits in Odare Forest left casualties on both sides. Despite setbacks, vigilante leaders vow to continue the fight as military operations intensify.
With official forces stretched thin, communities are increasingly relying on vigilante groups and spiritual methods, raising urgent questions about Nigeria’s grassroots security future.
