WHEN PERSECUTION TURNS INTO NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT: THE YAHAYA BELLO DRAMA UNPLUGGED
You know that moment when a scandal meant to stick ends up sticking to the accuser instead? Welcome to the wild world of Yahaya Bello vs. EFCC — where courtroom drama meets social media slip-ups, and the truth decides to crash the party uninvited.
Last Friday in Enugu, as I was cozying up to a colleague at an event, his phone buzzed with a headline from the EFCC’s official social media: “Alleged N80.2bn Kogi fraud: Witness alleges harassment by Yahaya Bello’s security aides.” Cue the collective gasp.
My colleague sighed, “Here we go again — overzealous security teams turning their bosses into headline villains.” I nodded, having followed the court cases closely, and honestly, this harassment story didn’t add up.
Turns out, the star witness himself, Arhyel-Bata from Zenith Bank, took the mic in court and said, “No harassment here, Your Honour. Nada.” That’s right — the guy who was supposedly harassed cleared the air in front of the EFCC’s own lawyer. Talk about a plot twist!
This little slip-up wasn’t just a facepalm moment for the EFCC; it was a full-on national embarrassment. The commission’s social media had already broadcast the false claim to the world, making the whole saga look more like a soap opera than a serious legal battle.
And here’s the kicker: the EFCC’s own counsel had earlier described the case as “political” — basically admitting this was less about justice and more about scoring political points. No wonder the former governor’s case has been under the microscope with such intensity.
Justice Emeka Nwite wasn’t having any of the political circus either, telling the EFCC that if this is a political case, then they better be ready to handle the heat that comes with it.
Meanwhile, the EFCC’s habit of spinning court stories for the media is causing more headaches than help. Judges are even threatening to step down from cases because of these misrepresentations. Yikes.
The bottom line? The EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede, is known for his integrity and nobility. It’s high time he reins in the overenthusiastic squad and reminds everyone that the fight against corruption shouldn’t turn into a circus act — especially one that embarrasses the nation.
