SULTAN OF SOKOTO AND CAN UNITE TO END GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA
Faith leaders are stepping up—uniting across religions to fight Gender-Based Violence and protect Nigeria’s vulnerable.
At a major session in Abuja, the Sultan of Sokoto and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) reaffirmed their commitment to ending GBV. The Sultan stressed the urgent need to tackle this “monster” and highlighted girl-child education as key to empowerment. CAN’s Ondo chairman called GBV a gross human rights violation, urging spiritual leaders to support survivors and push for justice.
Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi emphasised faith leaders’ vital role in encouraging survivors to speak out and partnering with law enforcement. The Minister of Women Affairs and UN Women representatives echoed the call for places of worship to become safe havens against abuse.
Together, they vow to turn religious platforms into powerful forces for dignity, justice, and peace.
