OJUKWU TAKES THE HELM: NEW PRESIDENT OF WEST AFRICA HUMAN RIGHTS NETWORK

Meet Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the new captain steering West Africa’s human rights ship — with a vision as bold as the region’s 50-year journey of unity!
In a decisive win, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN and Executive Secretary of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, snagged 8 out of 12 votes to become president of the National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) Network for West Africa. This powerhouse group covers all 12 ECOWAS countries, from Ghana to Senegal and beyond.
The election happened during a lively 3-day regional consultation in Abuja themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.” Ojukwu takes over from Dr. Joseph Withall and aims to boost human rights protection by building stronger cooperation, capacity, and data-driven monitoring across the region.
With 2025 marking 30 years of Nigeria’s NHRC, 50 years of ECOWAS, and 80 years since the UN Charter, Ojukwu’s presidency is perfectly timed to push human rights forward — with a little help from the UN, ECOWAS institutions, and regional partners.
