Nigeria’s football family is in mourning as President Tinubu pays heartfelt tribute to Peter Rufai, the iconic goalkeeper who guarded our goalposts and our hearts.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Peter Rufai, the legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper who died on July 3, 2025, at age 61. Known as Dodomayana, Rufai was celebrated not just for his incredible saves but for his patriotism and leadership that brought Nigeria glory—especially during the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations win and Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance.
Tinubu hailed Rufai as a trailblazer who helped put Nigerian football on the global stage, playing professionally across Europe and later founding the Staruf Football Academy to nurture young talent. Beyond the pitch, Rufai’s legacy as a mentor and prince of Idimu, Lagos, lives on.
“His name is written in gold in Nigerian sports history,” the President said, praying for peace for Rufai’s soul and comfort for his family and fans.
