NIGERIA MOURNS LEGENDARY GOALKEEPER PETER RUFAI

The football world is in mourning as Nigeria’s iconic goalkeeper Peter Rufai, a 1994 AFCON champion and two-time World Cup star, passes away at 61.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of “Dodo Mayana,” a humble yet fearless symbol of Nigerian football pride. NSC Chairman Malam Shehu Dikko hailed Rufai as a global ambassador whose legacy transcends the pitch, while NFF officials were shocked by his sudden passing after weeks of illness.

Rufai’s illustrious career spanned top European clubs and pivotal roles in Nigeria’s golden football era, including the 1994 AFCON victory and World Cup appearances in 1994 and 1998. Beyond his playing days, he mentored young talents and supported football development.

His courage, leadership, and passion left an indelible mark on Nigerian sports and inspired generations.
