Coach Abdulrahman Gbadamosi of Sebioba FC expressed deep sorrow over Rufai’s passing, calling him a phenomenal goalkeeper and role model. Rufai’s agility, leadership, and shot-stopping made him a standout in African football. He was pivotal in Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON win and starred in two World Cups, also forging a successful European career.
Political figures like Peter Obi and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also mourned the loss, highlighting Rufai’s dedication and national pride. Obi called him “one of Nigeria’s finest,” while Sanwo-Olu described his death as a huge blow to Nigerian football.
