GIVE PWDs A VOICE: MEDIA RIGHTS AGENDA CALLS FOR INCLUSIVE ELECTION COVERAGE
When it comes to election stories, everyone deserves the spotlight — including persons with disabilities (PWDs). Media Rights Agenda is ringing the bell for journalists to amp up inclusivity and ditch the stereotypes!
At a lively two-day “Able2 Vote” workshop in Awka, Media Rights Agenda CEO Edetaen Ojo urged journalists to treat PWDs like VIPs in election reporting — no special treatment, just equal attention. He stressed the power of words, pushing for language that’s fair, respectful, and stereotype-free. After all, how we talk shapes how society acts.
TAF Africa’s John Anwayi backed this up, highlighting the hurdles PWDs face, from mobility issues to communication barriers, and called on electoral bodies to step up with practical support like braille ballots and trained polling staff.
Lynn Aguncha of TAF Africa wrapped it up by pledging to amplify PWD voices, with a shoutout to the EU for backing this vital cause.
Inclusive election coverage isn’t just good journalism — it’s a democratic must. Let’s make sure every vote, every voice, counts.
