FG Declares State of Emergency on Suleja-Minna Road, Cancels Salini Contract
The Federal Government has declared a state of emergency on the dilapidated Suleja-Minna road, ordering urgent reconstruction after years of neglect and deadly accidents. Minister of Works David Umahi revealed the road’s terrible condition is causing travel delays of up to seven hours instead of 90 minutes.

The original contractor, Salini Nigeria Limited, was terminated after failing to repair the road despite being funded and urged for over 18 months. Umahi warned that any delay in mobilization by new contractors will lead to contract termination, stressing the urgency directed by President Tinubu.

Two contractors are now engaged, with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCCC) handling part of the project under emergency procurement. CCCC has 10 days to mobilize and start work on a critical 7km stretch. The entire road is 103km dual carriageway, with about 60km already done by the Niger State government.

Umahi also announced plans for security enhancements, including solar-lit rest areas and CCTV. The ministry will document progress publicly to ensure accountability and vowed to seek EFCC’s help if Salini fails to comply with directives.
