FG Plans Local Boat Manufacturing to Curb Waterway Accidents
The Federal Government is set to start manufacturing safer boats locally to replace unstable wooden vessels causing frequent accidents on Nigeria’s inland waterways. Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Shippers Council, said the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and NIWA are working hard to professionalize boat fabrication, following a new marine policy blueprint.
Akutah praised the distribution of life jackets nationwide and urged their consistent use. He also called for a coastal guard to improve navigation safety, especially at night.
Beyond waterways, the council is promoting vehicle transit parks in hinterlands to reduce road accidents caused by driver fatigue, providing secure rest stops and boosting local economies.
