UN Monitors Kenya After Deadly Anti-Government Protests
The UN is closely watching Kenya following violent protests that left at least 400 injured and an unconfirmed death toll between 8 and 16. The unrest marks the anniversary of last year’s anti-tax protests and was sparked by the recent death of blogger Albert Ojwan in police custody.
Protesters targeted government buildings, police offices, and businesses in Nairobi, leading to looting and arson. The UN human rights office called for restraint and transparent investigations into the use of lethal force, welcoming Kenya’s plan for an independent inquiry.
Kenya’s Interior Minister accused protesters of trying to force unconstitutional regime change, reporting attacks on police stations and stolen firearms.
