INEC Schedules Bye-Elections for August 16, Excludes Two Constituencies Over Security and Legal Issues
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set August 16, 2025, for bye-elections in 16 state and federal constituencies across 12 states, involving over 3.5 million registered voters. However, elections will not hold in Khana II (Rivers State) due to a state of emergency and Talata Mafara South (Zamfara State) amid ongoing legal disputes.
INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu announced the plan during a meeting with political party leaders in Abuja, confirming deployment of more than 30,000 officials to oversee the polls. Political parties are to conduct primaries between July 17-21, with candidate submissions from July 22-26. Campaigns run from August 2 to 14.
Yakubu also highlighted preparations for the November Anambra governorship election and ongoing voter registration exercises nationwide.
