Faith Kipyegon Misses Historic Sub-4-Minute Mile but Stays Optimistic
Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon came close but fell short of becoming the first woman to run a mile under four minutes, finishing in 4:06.42 during Nike’s “Breaking4” project. Despite running faster than her own world record, the time won’t be ratified due to the use of male pacers, similar to Eliud Kipchoge’s marathon attempt.
Kipyegon praised the crowd and remained hopeful, saying, “It’s only a matter of time” before a woman breaks the barrier. She plans to keep trying, whether in special events or regular competitions.
The men’s mile record still stands at 3:43.13 by Hicham El Guerrouj since 1999.
