Prof. Sheriff Ibrahim: China Offers Real Path to Africa’s Modernisation
Prof. Sheriff Ibrahim, Director of the Centre for Contemporary China-Africa Research, says China presents genuine modernisation opportunities for Africa. Speaking at the West Africa Post-FOCAC Forum in Abuja, he highlighted China’s massive investments—$5 billion in 2006, $60 billion in 2015-18, and $50.7 billion last year—that are driving Africa’s industrial growth.
Ibrahim praised the Ten Partnership Action Plans by President Xi Jinping as a historic roadmap for trade, health, green growth, security, and people-to-people ties. “Africa and China, home to one-third of the world’s population, are key to global modernisation,” he said.
Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai reaffirmed China’s commitment, noting zero tariffs on goods from 53 African countries and expanding cooperation in AI, digital trade, and green industries. Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership DG Joseph Tegebe highlighted Nigeria’s alignment with these actions, citing $8 billion in infrastructure projects and booming agricultural and healthcare collaborations.
