US Marine Sentenced to 7 Years for Sexual Assault in Okinawa
A Japanese court sentenced Lance Cpl. Jamel Clayton, 22, a US Marine stationed in Okinawa, to seven years in prison for attempting to sexually assault a woman and injuring her in May 2024. The Naha District Court described the attack as dangerous and malicious, with the victim’s testimony deemed highly credible.
Clayton denied the charges, but evidence showed he choked the woman from behind and caused injuries requiring two weeks of treatment. Prosecutors had sought a 10-year term. Crimes involving US military personnel in Okinawa remain a sensitive issue, fueling local protests over the years.
