SENATE TO HOLD NATIONWIDE PUBLIC HEARING

Senate to Hold Nationwide Public Hearings on Constitution Amendments July 4-5
The Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, chaired by Deputy Senate President Sen. Barau Jibrin, will hold two-day public hearings across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones on July 4 and 5. The sessions will take place simultaneously in Lagos (South-West), Enugu (South-East), Ikot Ekpene (South-South), Jos (North-Central), Maiduguri (North-East), and Kano (North-West).

The hearings aim to gather citizens’ views on over 60 proposed constitutional amendments covering key issues like local government autonomy, state police, judiciary reforms, electoral changes, gender inclusion, and state creation. Notably, 31 requests for new states will be considered.

Senator Jibrin emphasized the importance of public participation to shape Nigeria’s governance and democracy, urging Nigerians to engage actively in the process.
