ECOWAS STANDBY FORCE: TINUBU SAYS “LET’S GET MOVING!”

West Africa’s security can’t wait in the wings—President Tinubu is pressing his neighbors to activate the ECOWAS Standby Force and turn talk into action against terrorism.
At the 67th ECOWAS summit in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu didn’t mince words: the region’s fight against terrorism needs the ECOWAS Standby Force off the drawing board and into the field—yesterday. Calling the slow pace “worrying,” Tinubu stressed that no country can tackle these borderless threats solo. It’s time for teamwork, political will, and boots on the ground.
He also highlighted progress under his watch, like the new military logistics depot in Sierra Leone and Nigeria’s commitment to transport support. Plus, he’s hopeful that diplomatic talks will bring Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger back into the ECOWAS family soon.
Beyond security, Tinubu pushed for stronger economic ties, private sector empowerment, and speedy infrastructure projects like the West African Gas Pipeline and Abidjan–Lagos Highway to unlock the region’s powerhouse potential.
