Rwandan Opposition Leader Victoire Ingabire Arrested Amid Unrest Plot Allegations
Rwanda’s top investigative agency has arrested prominent opposition figure Victoire Ingabire, accusing her of trying to stir unrest. The Rwanda Investigation Bureau says she’s linked to a plot involving nine people—including a popular YouTube star—allegedly planning to overthrow the government.
This isn’t Ingabire’s first brush with the law. Back in 2013, she was jailed for 13 years on charges like conspiracy and incitement but was freed in 2018 through a presidential amnesty. Still, she wasn’t allowed to run against President Paul Kagame in last year’s election, which Kagame won with a staggering 99% of the vote.
While Kagame is praised for stabilising Rwanda after the 1994 genocide, critics say his government cracks down hard on opposition voices and the press. Similar trials of opposition leaders are also happening in neighboring Uganda and Tanzania.
