EU Bars Chinese Firms from Big Medical Device Contracts to Level the Playing Field
The European Commission is blocking Chinese companies from bidding on EU public contracts over €5 million for medical devices, citing unfair barriers Chinese firms impose on European suppliers. This move targets about 60% of the EU’s medical device procurement market, covering items like ventilators, X-ray machines, and surgical gear.
While exceptions exist where no alternatives are available, successful bids must limit Chinese-made inputs to 50%. The EU aims to push China toward fairer trade practices, though talks so far have stalled.
This is the first use of the EU’s 2022 International Procurement Instrument, signaling a tougher stance amid ongoing trade tensions with Beijing.
